Global Medical Brigades at SFSU

Global Medical Brigades is an international network of more than 80 university clubs and volunteer organizations that provide communities in developing nations with sustainable health care solutions. Our current emphasis is in Honduras, where in 2009 nearly 2,000 GMB volunteers traveled to Honduras to deliver services to about 70,000 patients in 113 communities.
Global Medical Brigades at SFSU
GMB at SFSU involves undergraduate students in recruitment of health professionals and procurement of medical supplies and funds for the brigades. Our mission provides a great experience for pre-health students and an opportunity to get involved with networking, third-world issues, and volunteer work. Students will have an immersive experience while preparing for and during the trip. Hands-on experience includes setting up a temporary clinic and staffing it in multiple areas (triage, shadowing, pharmacy), as well as preventative healthcare projects. Brigaders will participate in innovative fundraising and physician outreach efforts, and gain valuable hands-on public health and medical experience. Being an entirely student-run organization, we depend on creative, hard-working, and dedicated individuals with a sincere interest in global health and other related issues. Our Mission
Global Medical Brigades at San Francisco State University is a non-profit, student-led initiative to improve the health and well-being of underserved populations in rural Honduras. GMB is focusing its efforts on Honduras because it is the third poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with 51% of the population living on less than $2.50/day. Our mission is to empower individuals we work with, so that they make take agency with regards to their health, break the cycle of poverty, and lead a healthy, dignified life.
Our program is structured around annual trips where our brigades (teams of student and physician volunteers) set up mobile clinics to provide healthcare for these needy communities. In addition to providing medical attention, our brigades provide individuals with the basic knowledge, resources, and ability to improve their health.
